All dogs shed, and double-coated breeds can shed heavily, especially in spring and fall. You can't stop shedding, but regular brushing catches loose hair on the brush instead of on your floor, sofa and clothes.
What you'll need
- A slicker brush
- A metal comb
- A rubber bath brush and a dog shampoo
- A towel (and treats)
Step 1: Brush in sections
Start at the neck and work toward the tail, one section at a time. Use short, gentle strokes with the slicker brush in the direction the hair grows. On thick coats, lift the top layer with one hand and brush the hair underneath so you reach the loose undercoat.
Step 2: Check with a comb
Run the comb through each section down to the skin. Where it snags, go back with the brush. Pay extra attention behind the ears, under the legs and around the collar, where tangles form first.
Step 3: Bathe with a rubber brush
An occasional bath loosens a lot of dead hair. Work the shampoo in with a rubber bath brush in circular motions, then rinse very thoroughly; leftover shampoo can irritate the skin. Don't over-bathe: for most dogs, every few weeks or when they're dirty is plenty.
Step 4: Dry, then brush again
Towel-dry well. Once the coat is completely dry, give it one more brush. You'll be surprised how much more hair comes out after a bath.
How often?
- Short, smooth coats: once or twice a week.
- Medium and double coats: three or four times a week, daily during heavy shedding seasons.
- Long coats: several times a week, combing right down to the skin to prevent mats.
When to see a groomer or vet
Heavy, matted coats are best handled by a professional groomer; cutting mats out at home risks nicking the skin. Bald patches, redness, constant scratching or shedding far beyond normal can be signs of a health problem, so check with your vet.
