At-Home Grooming Guide
The At-Home Grooming Guide
A calm, 15-minute routine using the tools in your kit. Go slowly, reward often, and stop if your dog is stressed — short, positive sessions build trust.
Before you start
- Pick a quiet time after a walk, when your dog is relaxed.
- Have treats ready. Reward calm behavior throughout.
- Use a non-slip surface (a towel or bath mat).
The 15-minute routine
- Brush (5 min) — slicker brush: brush in the direction of hair growth with light, short strokes. Work section by section: back, sides, chest, legs, tail. Never press the pins hard into the skin.
- Comb through (3 min) — steel comb: comb the same sections to catch any tangles the brush missed. If the comb snags, go back to the brush.
- Details (2 min) — fine-tooth comb: gently comb the face, around the ears and the paws.
- Tidy (2 min) — scissors: trim long hair between paw pads and around the feet. Keep the scissor tips pointed away from your dog and trim only hair you can see clearly.
- Nails (3 min) — clipper: trim only the tip of each nail, below the quick (the pink area inside light-colored nails). For dark nails, take tiny slices. If unsure, trim less and more often.
Teeth & bath
- Teeth: use the double-ended toothbrush with a dog toothpaste (never human toothpaste) 2–3 times per week.
- Bath: use the rubber brush with a dog shampoo to work lather into the coat and loosen shed hair. Rinse well and brush once dry.
How often?
- Short coats: brush 1–2× per week.
- Medium & double coats: brush 3–4× per week, daily during shedding season.
- Nails: every 2–4 weeks, or when you hear them click on the floor.
